Calculating percentages
Calculating percentages is a useful everyday skill — whether you're working out the sale price of an item, your grades, or how much to tip at a restaurant.
The basic process:
- Identify the whole (the total, or base).
- Identify the part (the value you want as a percentage).
- Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100.
For example, to find what percentage 10 is of 50: 10 ÷ 50 = 0.2, then 0.2 × 100 = 20%. So 10 is 20% of 50.
The general formula is:
percentage = (part / whole) × 100
Rearrange it to solve for a missing value:
whole = part / (percentage / 100) part = (percentage / 100) × whole
